What GTM engineering actually means

A plain definition of a term that gets used loosely, and how it differs from consulting and RevOps.

GTM engineering applies technology, data, automation, and revenue strategy to how a business finds, converts, and keeps customers. The defining characteristic is not the tooling. It is that the person designing the system is also responsible for building it.

Traditional consulting ends at the recommendation. RevOps typically owns systems inside a company that already has a sales team. GTM engineering sits earlier and closer to the build: designing the motion, wiring the infrastructure, and instrumenting it well enough to know whether it works.

At startup scale that means ICP criteria turned into real target lists, enrichment, CRM architecture, sequenced outreach, and forecasting grounded in stage definitions. At small business scale it means every inquiry captured, answered, tracked, and followed through.

Same discipline. Very different surface area. The mistake is assuming the small business version needs the startup version's tooling.
